The Scientific Library of the Institute of Mathematics and Mechanics dates back to 1956, when the decision was accepted to set up the Sverdlovsk Division of the V.A.Steklov Institute of Mathematics (SDIM).
From the very outset, professor S.B.Stechkin, first vice-director of the V.A.Steklov Institute of Mathematics, had given special attention to the Library acquisition. He was an originator of all works of the creation of SDIM.
In Moscow, a great work was implementing to create a microfilm stock of major foreign mathematical journals and monographs. In addition, book collections of some Moscow mathematicians were purchased. The Library stock was replenished with books and journals from the exchange stock of the USSR Academy of Sciences. Simultaneously, the alphabetical and systematic catalogues were arranged.
In 1957, current mathematical literature for the SDIM began to arrive from Moscow to Sverdlovsk.
After the construction of the Institute building had been completed, in the early May of 1962, rooms were placed at the disposal of the Library. It is these rooms that the Library now occupies. By that time, the Library fund of books amounted to twenty one thousand titles. Currently, the Library stock contains 131 thousand titles, of which 50 percents are foreign publications. The Library has a considerable number of mathematical editions, which are unique not only in the city but also in the Urals region.
In 1994, the own library of the correspondent-member of the RAS V.K.Ivanov, who before his death worked in IMM, was presented to the IMM Library. It contains more than 1000 books. In 1996, the professor S.B.Stechkin memorial library, wich includes more than 3000 books and journals, was bought. This one was founded by S.B.Stechkin's father, well-known scientist, the creator of the air-jet engine theory, academician B.S.Stechkin, and in it there are unique books of different domains of science dated of XVIII and XIX centuries. At present, books from the S.B.Stechkin's library are processing. Both libraries are separated from the main stock, and data of books added to the Library catalogs.
In the Library highly skilled and devoted to their affair employees always worked.
The services offered to the readers include Lending, Reading-hall, the Reference-bibliographic Department, and Interlibrary Lending.
The Library Bibliographic Department runs 12 topical files that cover the Institute major research directions:
The Library has an alphabetical and a systematic catalogue, a catalogue of journals and serials, an alphabetical file of authors' abstracts and foreign series.
Since 1989, a work is carring out to create an alphabetical electronic catalogue (AEC). From topical files (Approximation Theory, Mathematical Physics Equations, Automation of Programming, Controlled Systems, Differential Games) the informational Data Bases (DB) were organized on PC connected with the Institute local net. DB "V.K.Ivanov's Library" and "S.B.Stechkin's Library" are founding.
For the creation of these DB the system LIBRARY ("ÁÈÁËÈÎÒÅÊÀ") was worked out by the Institute Department Informational Systems jointly with bibliographers of the Reference-bibliographic Department of the Library. This system allows to put the data into DB and to edit it. The search service is well organized, and, moreover it is possible to receive the hard copies of the selected records in a list form. The data from DB and AEC, the information about new books got in the last month, researchers can receive through the local net in any Institute department.
In keeping with the Institute profile, bibliographic periodicals have been collected since the date of their publication. Such review journals as "Matematika" and "Mekhanika" (since 1956), the American "Mathematical Reviews" (since 1941 - Vol.2). Since 1871 up to the year 1944 issues of the German review journal "Jahrbuch uber die Forschritte der Mathematik" are available here, as well as "Zentralblatt fur Mathematik" issues extending since 1931 up to 1971.
There are the rare editions such as: Brokgaus and Efron's Encyclopaedia, Brothers Granat's Encyclopaedia, Comptes Rendus de l'Academie des Sciences, Paris - since 1838.
In the past 15 years, two retrospective subject indexes of references had been published on differential games and approximation theory.
